Here’s what sets them apart
The term ‘oil’ is sometimes thrown around interchangeably. For example, some people say fuel oil when, in fact, they are really referring to heating oil. But the fact of the matter is that fuel oil and heating oil are different and they do different things.
The origin of heating oil and fuel oil
Both heating oil and fuel oil are by products of crude oil. They are each made from crude oil once crude oil has gone through a refining process referred to as distillation. Both kinds of oils are made out of hydrocarbons that are removed from crude oil during distillation, purified and then blended.
While they are made the same way and while they are both a by-product of crude oil, their differences can be found in how they are used and what they are used for.
Differences Between Heating Oil and Fuel Oil
Here is one way to think about the difference between heating oil and fuel oil: heating oil falls under the umbrella of fuel oil. All heating oil is considered fuel oil, but not all fuel oil is considered heating oil.
As you may be able to detect from the name, heating oil is specifically for heating homes and commercial spaces.
Fuel oil, on the other hand, can go beyond home and commercial heating. It is any petroleum product that can power either a home heating system or vehicle engine. Fuel oil is typically a heavier fuel than both heating oil and gas.
In addition to heating oil there are two other categories of fuel oil:
- Diesel: Diesel fuel is used to power both on-road vehicles such as trucks and fleets of school buses and off-road equipment such as power generators, construction equipment and farm equipment.
- Kerosene: Similar to heating oil, kerosene is also a product of crude oil. You make it by distilling crude oil at incredibly high temperatures. It can work in continuous freezing temperatures thanks to the fact that it has a low “gel point”. While kerosene’s popularity has decreased over the years, it is still used in mobile homes and for outdoor fuel tanks.
